What personal data I collect and why I collect it

Technical connection

For technical reasons, when you enter the heinnews.com address, the server on which heinnews.com is hosted (which is located within a member state country of the European Union) requires specific information (such as your IP address, browser and version, device on which you are accessing the site) in order to correctly serve the web page to you. Without this, it is not technically possible to serve the site. This information is stored indefinitely in the server logs.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, the site collects the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. In order to leave a comment, you are required to enter a name and an email address. The comment then needs to be manually approved by me before it goes online (or is rejected). Sometimes, comments are assessed as being spam and, again, need to be manually approved by me. The name and email address is only used for the purpose of checking the legitimacy of a comment. Under no circumstances is this email address used for any other purposes. If you would like me to send you copies of your comments, please email me. The same applies to erasure.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

When you submit an email to me by using the contact form on the Contact page, the email is sent via email directly to my email inbox. I then respond directly to you via email. The email you send is not stored on my server. Your information (email address, name, message) is stored indefinitely and is only used to respond to your inquiry. Your information will not be sold or disclosed to third parties. In order to send an email via the webform, you must give your consent.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for 1 year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, this site will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, the site will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

You may revoke your consent to cookies here:

Accept Cookies by clicking "Accept" in the banner.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, Twitter feed, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

I have put in place the option for you to decide whether you want such embedded content to display. If you wish to view the content, you are required to click “Accept” in the notice that appears at the top of the screen. You can view this site without giving your consent and the third party content will not be loaded. However, this will result in certain features (e.g. content from third parties, such as YouTube, Facebook that set third-party cookies) being automatically blocked. To activate this content, click the “Accept” button at any time.

You will also see a notice displayed as a placeholder where the third party content would normally display. By clicking “Accept”, the page will reload and the content will display. Please note that, by consenting to the display of content, you consent to the display of content of all third party content.

The cookie that is set on your computer containing your chosen option will automatically expire after 1 month. After this time, you will be prompted to decide again when you visit the website. The same applies if you delete your browser’s history or cache.

Important note about third party websites: These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. Please refer to the privacy policy of the providers of such websites to find out how they deal with your information.

Analytics

Who I share your data with (usage tracking)

I do not track the usage of the site and have not installed third-party software (such as from Google) to do so. Therefore, no data is sent to third-party companies.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data that is held about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request the erasure of any personal data that is held about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. Please contact me (see details above) if you would like me to provide you with a copy of your data, rectify it or delete it from my server.

Where I send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. The provider of this service and its servers are located in a member state country of the European Union.

Third-party links

Occasionally, I include links to other websites. Examples of such links on this site include, but are not limited to, PayPal (to make a donation to support heinnews), links to so-called RSS feeds (to subscribe to my podcast). Although I take every effort to check these sites before I provide a link to my site, I am not able to assume responsibility for the sites and the links to these sites. Please refer to the privacy policies of the sites themselves to find out how they deal with data. Also be aware that links may be out of date. Again, I cannot check that the many links from heinnews.com are up to date.

Should a data breach be detected, you will be informed at the email address you used to register with the site (such as to post a comment or register a user) within 72 hours.
