Brose Bamberg collected their first victory of the easyCredit BBL Final Tournament 2020 with a 99-83 win over FRAPORT SKYLINERS after a disappointing last loss.

Seven players scored in double figures for Bamberg, who improved to 1-2 in Group B and played much better than their defeat against MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg. Kam Taylor and Retin Obasohan both scored 13 points, Tre McLean, Jordan Crawford and Christian Sengfelder all tallied 12 points and Mateo Seric and Assem Marei both picked up 10 points for Bamberg, whose final game will come against RASTA Vechta on Monday June 15.

Frankfurt dropped to 1-3 despite Quantez Robertson pouring in 13 points and Gytis Masiulis chipping in 11 points.

Bamberg came out strong offensively with Marei scoring the first five points. Then Crawford dropped two three-pointers and was followed from long range by McLean and Paris Lee as Bamberg built a 19-11 lead. Taylor got into the three-point game with a bomb and Bamberg were up 26-13 and the gap was 29-18 after 10 minutes.

Frankfurt cut the deficit to 31-22 but Crawford converted a three-point play and Lee drained another long ball as the cushion swelled to 42-25. Skyliners continued with their problems slowing down Bamberg with a big dunk from McLean and a three-point play from Elias Harris as the lead grew to 56-31. The halftime score was 58-36 for Bamberg.

Robertson drained three three-balls to go with three Akeem Vargas free throws in a 12-2 Frankfurt run to pull within 61-48. Sengfelder answered with two treys of his own; Crawford was on target again from outside and Obasohan converted a three-point play as Bamberg’s lead grew to 75-52. Matthew McQuaid did knock down a three for Frankfurt to pull within 75-59 but Bamberg did not let up and led 84-66 after 30 minutes.

Frankfurt refused to give up and figured the least they should try to improve the final result in case of a possible three-way tie at 1-3 with Bamberg and RASTA Vechta. Skyliners used a 15-5 spurt to get within 91-81 with 4 minutes left. Taylor and Obasohan added layups in the final 2 minutes to help push the final margin out a bit in the case of a three-way tie.

QUOTES: Bamberg’s Christian Sengfelder: “Defensively we weren’t that good in the second half. 83 points is a little too much. But we showed another side today, and we needed to get a win.”
“The last game we came out with bad energy, and we didn’t have the energy you need to play at this level. And we brought better energy today.”

Frankfurt’s Max Begue: “It was definitely an experience being on the court for the first time. Unfortunately it didn’t go too well for us in the first half. But I think we tried to fight our way back into the game in the second half. You cannot really describe our performance here on just one game but rather the entire picture. And I would say we have definitely given a good impression and played well.”
(Where he had the confidence to score his first points): “I would say from practice. That’s where I get most of it. I have been practicing with the BBL team here and there for a while now. I just came into the game as any other. Of course you are a little nervous.”
