Janek Stela struck out nine and allowed three hits as the Regensburg Legionäre IV won their season opener 11-3 at the Nürnberg Noris Diamonds in four innings.

Regensburg scored eight runs in the third inning to break open the game while Stela had a no-hitter for 2 1/3 innings and survived seven Legionäre errors.

The Legionäre opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the second with Travis Gaug getting Regensburg’s first hit of the season and Steven Kasprzak and Adam Lederway driving in runs.

Stela gave up five of his eight walks in the first two innings but the Diamonds could not score, leaving five runners on base over the first two frames.

The guests then took over the game with eight runs on seven hits in the third inning, which was started with David Hein singling and then coming all the way around on an error by the Diamonds shortstop.

With Regensburg already up 5-0, Jan Niklas singled to drive in two more runs. Michael Seidel and Gaug also picked up RBIs as the lead swelled to 11-0 going into the bottom of the third.

The Diamonds finally picked up their first hit with one out in the third and three errors allowed Nürnberg to get on the scoring board.

After Regensburg failed to score in the fourth, Stela gave up two more runs – on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch – before striking out the final two batters to finish off the victory.

Lederway, Gaug, Niklas and Andre Koos each collected two hits while Steven Mullen was on base three times with two runs; Hein scored twice and Kasprzak drove in two runs.
