Just more than a week before the start of the season, German BBL league title contenders Bayern Munich are left scrambling to replace perhaps their most important player after center Sharrod Ford left the club for personal reasons.
The promoted club’s one real lack of depth was in the front court and Munich had even hoped to fill in that hole with the signing of Ruben Boumtje Boumtje on a two-month contract on September 21. Then Bayern announced on September 25 that Ford had already voided his contract and was back in the U.S.
Bayern coach Dirk Bauermann called Ford’s departure a “massive setback”.
“He played a central role in our plans. Replacing him now will be certainly difficult,” Bauermann told sport1.
“We have to accept that a player has private problems,” said Bayern personnel director Marko Pesic in the Munich daily AZ.
“But with that, one of our cornerstones is broken away. We will have to acquire a new player. But we will take our time until we have found the right one.”
Besides the 33-year-old Boumtje Boumtje, Bayern only have 18-year-old promising center talent Bogdan Radosavljevic and 36-year-old Darius Hall as low post options.
“We have to react. Me and Marko Pesic will have some hard work. Now we have to probe the market and tap all possible sources to find a solution,” said Bauermann.
“This really surprised us. He was very concerned when he told us the morning after the preparation game in Treviso (on Sept 22) that he has some difficult things to deal with at home.”
